the Certina DS-1 Big Date, 60th Anniversary.

The Timekeeper’s Legacy: The Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition.

In the heart of Switzerland, where the Alps whisper tales of precision and craftsmanship, a watchmaker named Certina etched its name into history.

The year was 1959, and with the birth of the Double Security (DS) Concept, Certina crafted timepieces that could withstand the rugged trials of life.

Sixty years later, in 2019, a new chapter unfolded a watch that carried the weight of this legacy while embracing the pulse of the modern world…

the Certina DS-1 Big Date, 60th Anniversary.

 A Watch Born of Celebration.

The workshop hummed with anticipation as Certina’s artisans gathered to honor six decades of durability.

They envisioned a timepiece that would bridge past and present, a tribute to the DS Concept’s promise of resilience.

The result was a watch with a reference number, C029.426.11.091.60, but to those who held it, it was more than a code… it was a story told in steel and sapphire.

Priced at a modest $980 – $1,085, this creation wasn’t reserved for the elite.

It was a gift to anyone who valued time’s enduring rhythm, a Swiss masterpiece accessible to dreamers and doers alike.

The Face of Time.

As the watch took shape, its 41 mm stainless steel case gleamed under the workshop’s lights, polished to a mirror-like finish.

At just 10.33 mm thick, it was a gentle giant, robust yet refined. The artisans fitted it with a convex sapphire crystal, its anti-reflective coating catching the light like a mountain lake.

Through the sapphire case back, engraved with “60th Anniversary,” the heartbeat of the watch was visible, a testament to Certina’s pride in its craft.

The dial was the soul of the story.

A dégradé green sunburst, it shimmered from deep forest to midnight black, evoking the 1960s’ elegance while whispering of today’s bold spirit.

Faceted indices, like tiny mountain peaks, marked the hours, and long, graceful hands danced across the dial.

At 6 o’clock, a grand date window stood proud, a “big date” that declared its presence and charm.

The Certina logo, “DS-1,” and a nod to the “Special Edition” were etched with care, each word a chapter in the watch’s tale.

A Milanese mesh bracelet, woven like a storyteller’s thread, wrapped the wrist in comfort.

Its butterfly clasp ensured the watch stayed close, a faithful companion for life’s adventures, whether scaling a peak, sealing a deal, or savoring a quiet evening.

 The Heart That Beats Within.

Deep within the case, the ETA Powermatic 80.651 movement pulsed with life.

This automatic calibre, a first for Certina, was no ordinary heart. With 23 jewels and a rhythm of 28,800 vibrations per hour, it promised precision. Its 80-hour power reserve was a marvel, letting the watch rest for over three days yet spring back to life at the wearer’s touch.

But the true magic lay in the Nivachron balance spring, a titanium-based alloy born from a collaboration with the Swatch Group.

Like a shield, it defied magnetic fields, shrugged off shocks, and stood firm against time’s whims. In a world buzzing with electronics, this watch kept its cool, its accuracy unwavering.

The DS Concept, Certina’s 1959 vow of durability, lived on in the watch’s DNA.

A reinforced case back, intricate O-ring seals, and a sapphire crystal formed an unbreakable bond, guarding against water up to 100 meters and the jolts of life’s journey.

A Companion for Every Tale.

Weighing 132 grams, the watch was substantial yet kind to the wrist.

Its hypoallergenic steel ensured no skin would recoil from its embrace.

Whether braving a storm, striding into a boardroom, or toasting under starlight, the DS-1 Big Date was ready.

Its green dial caught eyes, its mesh bracelet turned heads, and its story stirred hearts.

Some might note its lack of COSC certification, a badge of chronometer precision. But the Nivachron spring and Powermatic movement silenced doubts, offering reliability that rivaled pricier peers.

For a few, the 41 mm case might feel bold, but its slim profile ensured balance, a harmony of form and function.

A Keepsake to Cherish.

Nestled in a dark wooden box, the watch arrived as a treasure, perfect for gifting or safeguarding.

A 2-year warranty promised Certina’s trust in its craft. It found its way to wrists through Certina’s website, trusted retailers like Watches of Switzerland, or platforms like Chrono24, where it glowed at around $1,179.

The Legacy Continues.

The Certina DS-1 Big Date Powermatic 80 Special Edition is more than a watch, it’s a bridge across time.

It carries the spirit of 1959, when Certina dared to make watches tougher, and the ambition of 2019, when innovation met artistry.

Its green dial, robust heart, and timeless design invite wearers to write their own stories, each tick a reminder of moments that matter.

To hold this watch is to hold a piece of Certina’s soul.
